Sounds distinctively like something a wild hearted woman would do to please a lover. Like in that romance novel he has, when the poor heroine is rejected for her prudish ways, and she still goes out of her way to try to please the cad that she desires. He doesn't want his crewmates to judge him, and he'd normally latch on to something like that and run with it cruely. If he's mean about it, he's protecting himself and he'll seem more straight. And if he's the manliest, most straight and masculine man ever, then no one can hurt him and he's strong enough to be safe.
